Emerson Software Discovery

We kicked off a Discovery Session with Emerson with a facilitated Centered Design Workshop which I led for key stakeholders. The purpose of the workshop was to gather information regarding Emerson’s objectives and goals for an internal software project, and to collaborate on ideas and priorities to develop a solution that meets Emerson’s short-term and long-term business needs, develop a clear vision, and an approach for developing the ideal interactive experience for Emerson’s intended audience.

Pre-stated Workshop Goals

Prior to the workshop, we deployed a survey to the Emerson attendees to discover specific goals to be addressed at the workshop. From this survey, we uncovered that our main goal was to not only specify functionality for the new Emerson software, but also seek to gain a clear understanding of the other industry verticals so that a digital platform may be built around the new software for other Emerson business units.

Goals Discovered at Workshop

During the workshop, the team decided to shift the focus from the new software and instead gather information on the needs of a scalable digital platform and define a strategy for the next three to five years. The digital platform was defined to be experiential, educational, and social— providing self-service to generate demand rather than fulfilling demand.

By developing a broader vision, Emerson hopes to bridge their organizations with an integrated digital strategy. Through the course of the workshop and subsequent discovery, Emerson hopes to develop a compelling solution to bring to other business units, let them know they are endorsing this as a pilot project and create awareness and garner support throughout the organization.

Initial Concepts

Based on the Discovery Workshop findings, we created a conceptual design that incorporates many of the ideas and features that seemed most important to the Emerson team.
